Tamara Kay Trevarthen, 65, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital in Homewood AL.
She was born October 10, 1959, in Birmingham to Truman Earl Trevarthen and Marie Driver Trevarthen, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in 1982 and started her career at UAB Hospital as an emergency room nurse. She was an operating room nurse and a part of the general surgery and kidney and liver transplant teams at UAB Hospital and Baptist Medical Center Montclair. In 2020, she retired as an Application Analyst with Baptist Health Systems.
Tamara was a gifted singer and performer who was a member of Vanderbilt's Original Cast, a Broadway song and dance troupe. After moving to Birmingham following graduation and beginning her work at UAB hospital, she was active in more than a dozen productions at Birmingham's Town and Gown Theatre, Birmingham Summerfest, and other local theater groups during the 1980s and 90s.
Tamara will be long remembered for her warmth, her keen sense of humor, and as a great cook who loved music, her dogs, and the company of close friends. Her greatest love in music was vocal harmony.
Tamara is survived by her husband Ray William (Bill) Monk Jr. of Homewood, Alabama; sister Trudy Trevarthen of Dubois, Wyoming; brother Truman Earl (Tip) Trevarthen Jr. of Waukegan, Illinois; nieces and nephews C. Robin Mattheus, Kelly M. Mattheus, Truman Earl (Trip) Trevarthen III, and Betsy Trevarthen Block; and sister-in-law Mary (Terry) Monk-Tutor.
She also was preceded in death by her mother-in-law Ruth Robinson Monk and father-in-law Ray William Monk Sr.
A funeral service will be held in the large sanctuary at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, on Friday, April 4, at 12 noon. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. in the narthex with the service immediately following at noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Birmingham Humane Society, or a charity of choice.
