Alice Ferguson Holmes was born March 17, 1929. To Fredrick Elmo Ferguson and Elizabeth Lillian Storm Ferguson in Ames, Iowa. Alice completed her earthly journey June 24, 2026.

The family and friends of Alice F. Holmes remember her joy-filled life. She loved to share her faith, family, adventure, learning and helping others as she marched to the beat of her own drum.

Alice loved being with people and celebrating life. Her positivity was contagious as she brought a light into every room. She smiled often and loved to laugh. She found ways to turn hard moments into "opportunities" to help everyone find a way to improve the situation and create a better outcome.

Alice was particularly fond of children. Engaging them brought many smiles. She would happily get down on the floor to play with kids "at their level and in their world." She loved sharing ideas with children to help them grow and learn to navigate the world. Even in her final days, visits from her great grandson or other children were a joy.

Alice loved to learn and loved sharing those ideas with others. As a speech therapist, she created "Games" and other activities to make learning fun. She applied those skills in settings from Headstart, to public schools, clinics, and nursing homes. She passionately wanted to help people from all walks of life. She learned Cued Speech and advocated for its acceptance and use.

Alice loved words, and languages. She studied six languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Latin and Hungarian) and enjoyed speaking them whenever she could or playing word games with others. She taught Spanish at Falkville High School for a few years.

Alice was an avid reader even up to her final days. She enjoyed exploring others' ideas. Her reading interests were diverse including: classic literature, history, faith, humor, travel, and biographies.

Alice was a big advocate of education. While her children were young, she was very active in the Falkville PTA. She advocated for funding and support of schools. In mid-life, she volunteered with her husband (Harold) in adult education to help many people earn their GED and learn English as a second language. As grandchildren arrived, she learned new skills to support students with dyslexia and autism. She used those skills helping children through conversation, games, and play.

Alice was a life long and devout Episcopalian. She regularly attended services where she gave generously and served in a variety of capacities supporting the church and its service to the community. She supported many faith-based organizations including: the Order of St. Luke the Physician, Daughters of the King, Cursillo, Camp McDowell, Grace Episcopal Church in Cullman, and Saint Barnabus in Hartselle.

Throughout her life, she "leaned in" to help others. Alice was a force to make the world a better place. If she saw a cause she believed in, she would join it to create change. Her efforts included helping to bring safe drinking water to her community. When road names were being formalized, she collected the signatures needed to name her road "Pleasant Country Road" in honor of an elder family member's request.

Her love of family started with her devotion to Harold, her late husband of 52 years. They shared many wonderful adventures and moments, from traveling to New Zealand, Ireland, Canada and Alaska to holding hands in their later years. They were devoted to their marriage, their shared life, their children and grandchildren.

Alice is survived by daughters Martha Holmes Smith (Wayne) Falkville, AL, Anna Rilla Holmes (Akil Rangwalla) Fountain Inn,SC and son William Francis Storm Holmes (Carolyn, Georgetown, KY, grandchildren: William Holmes, Michael Holmes, Anna Holmes, Maria Smith Daws (Jimmy), Storm Smith Best (Joey) Vijay Rangwalla, great-grandson Ender Daws and sister Elizabeth Lockhart, Victoria, B.C., Canada, nieces and nephews.

Alice's Celebration of Life is at Grace Episcopal Church, 305 Arnold St. NE, Cullman, Alabama on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Visitation is from 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM. The memorial service follows at 4:30 PM with a reception to follow. She will be interred beside her beloved Harold at Piney Grove Cemetery, Falkville, Alabama later in a family ceremony.
