Mahlon A. Hartselle

May 20, 1928 ~ September 6, 2018 (age 90)


Mahlon A. Hartselle, Jr.  passed away September 6, 2018 in Brentwood, Tennessee.  He was born May 20, 1928, in Hartselle Alabama, the oldest of 6 children, to the late Nellie Kate and Mahlon A. Hartselle, Sr.  He was preceded in death by Jean Praytor Hartselle, his beloved wife with whom he had 50 years of marriage, wife Jackie Sandoe Hartselle, to whom was married to for 11 years, brother Ted Hartselle, sister Linda Fowler and sister Amelia Crawford.  Mahlon grew up in Hartselle and graduated from Morgan County High School.  From his earliest years, Mahlon was industrious, taking the initiative to help his family make its living with a cow and chickens as well as an acre of garden or “truck patch” that produced all they could eat and enough left over for sale to the public and canning for the next winter.  At the age of 14, he bought his first airplane which he flew until he joined the Army Air Corp, serving in Europe from June 16, 1946 to June 16, 1949.  After his military service, Mahlon returned to Hartselle and married Jean, his childhood sweetheart.  Mahlon entered the corporate management world in 1950 which carried him and his family to thirteen different cities throughout the US during the next 38 years while working with 4 national companies.  During his early working years, he also attended Athens College and the University of Georgia.  Mahlon was employed by Allstate Insurance for 12 years as a sales manager and as the national marketing manager for auto insurance throughout the US and Canada.  In 1969, he joined Nationwide Insurance Company from which he retired in 1988.  Mahlon had a lifelong passion for reading, history, and travel (22 foreign countries on five continents) and never hesitated to share a good story.

Mahlon is survived by his children, Mary Lynne (Eli) Capilouto, Mimi (Jim) Steele and Art (Glenda) Hartselle; 5 grandchildren, Amy (Rich) Hawkins, David (Kiley) Steele, Heather (Cliff) Pitts, Aaron (Carter) Hartselle, Emily Capilouto; and 10 great grandchildren, Maya, Emily, Olivia and Eliza Hawkins, Cooper and Foster Ingalls, Jacob and Lindey Steele, Micah and Eli Pitts.  The family wants to express their deepest appreciation for the loving care provided by Theresa Cannon, Joyce Seay, and Patricia Webb over the past three years.  A memorial service will be held on September 30, 2018 at 12:30 pm at the Hartselle Depot located at 110 Railroad Street, Hartselle, Alabama.  Peck Funeral Home will be handling arrangements.
